Digital Marketing for Small Businesses ยท Part 9

Measuring Results and Improving Customer Conversion

Use simple records to understand which activities create profitable customers.

Use simple records to understand which activities create profitable customers.

What you will learn

  • Choose meaningful marketing measures
  • Track leads sales and source consistently
  • Improve weak steps through small tests

Before you begin

Use a real business only when you have permission to manage its information. Practise with a small budget or invented campaign first. Never publish customer information, account passwords, verification codes, private tokens or payment credentials.

Measure the funnel

Record how many people saw, responded, qualified, purchased and returned. Each stage shows a different problem or opportunity.

Use consistent definitions. A message asking only for free information may not be a qualified lead, and an unpaid promise is not a completed sale.

Track the source

Ask how customers found the business and use separate links, codes or labels where practical. Respect privacy and collect only information that supports the decision.

Calculate revenue, direct campaign cost and approximate gross profit. High sales can still produce a loss when discounts and fulfilment costs are ignored.

Test improvement

If many people enquire but few buy, examine price clarity, trust, response time and fulfilment. If few people respond, review audience, offer and creative.

Run a small test with a defined period and success measure. Keep a record of what changed and what happened.

Guided practice

  1. Create a weekly marketing scorecard.
  2. Calculate conversion rate and cost per customer using sample data.
  3. Choose one weak step and design a small test.

Knowledge check

  1. What stages belong in a simple funnel?
  2. Why track gross profit as well as revenue?
  3. Why change one main variable at a time?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
