Using Slide Master Headers Footers and Templates
Make efficient presentation-wide changes and prepare reusable, consistent layouts.
Make efficient presentation-wide changes and prepare reusable, consistent layouts.
What you will learn
- Explain the relationship between masters and layouts
- Change repeated design elements centrally
- Save a reusable presentation template safely
Before you begin
Use a practice presentation and non-sensitive sample information. PowerPoint versions can place commands differently, so use the ribbon search box when a named command is not immediately visible. Save before making major changes.
Understand the master
Slide Master controls presentation-wide design and contains related layouts. Changes made there can update many slides at once.
Edit individual slides in Normal view and common design elements in Slide Master view. Close Master View when the layout work is complete.
Manage repeated elements
Use layouts for logo position, background elements and placeholder placement. Use Header and Footer controls for slide numbers, date and footer text.
Avoid manually copying repeated items onto every slide. Central control reduces inconsistent positioning and makes later changes easier.
Prepare a reusable file
Remove confidential content and example data before creating a reusable template. Keep instructional sample slides only when they help future authors.
Save the master presentation separately so new work does not overwrite it. Test each custom layout with realistic text and images.
Guided practice
- Open Slide Master view and identify the master and layouts.
- Add a harmless repeated element to a practice layout.
- Insert slide numbers, then verify title-slide behaviour.
Knowledge check
- What should be edited in Slide Master view?
- Why should repeated objects not be copied manually?
- What must be removed before sharing a template?
Completion standard
Continue when you can complete the guided practice and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
