Follow a calm diagnostic process and finish a maintainable everyday configuration.

What you will learn

  • Use Force Quit Activity Monitor and startup controls carefully
  • Apply a repeatable troubleshooting sequence
  • Complete a secure personal MacBook setup

Before you begin

Use non-sensitive practice files and save your work before changing settings. Menu names can vary with the macOS version and MacBook model, so use System Settings search or the Help menu when an option is not immediately visible.

Handle an unresponsive app

Wait briefly and save work elsewhere if possible. Use Force Quit only when the app cannot be closed normally because unsaved changes may be lost.

Activity Monitor shows processes and resource use. Do not end unfamiliar system processes merely because their names are unclear.

Troubleshoot in order

Read the complete message and note what changed. Check power, cables, Wi-Fi and available storage. Restart the affected app, then the Mac if needed.

Install relevant updates, test one change at a time and use Apple Diagnostics or qualified support for persistent hardware concerns. Back up before reinstalling or erasing.

Finish the setup

Organise files, pin essential apps, confirm updates and privacy permissions, configure Time Machine, review Find My and record trusted support and recovery information.

A maintainable MacBook is one whose owner can find files, recognise warnings, restore important data and explain the security choices in use.

Guided practice

  1. Create a personal folder structure and Dock arrangement.
  2. Confirm update, privacy and automatic-lock settings.
  3. Complete and test a backup.
  4. Write a five-step troubleshooting and recovery checklist.

Knowledge check

  1. When should Force Quit be used?
  2. Why change one thing at a time?
  3. What should a final MacBook setup confirm?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
