Adjust the MacBook for comfortable, secure daily use without losing important protections.

What you will learn

  • Navigate System Settings efficiently
  • Manage users notifications and Focus
  • Use built-in accessibility options

Before you begin

Use non-sensitive practice files and save your work before changing settings. Menu names can vary with the macOS version and MacBook model, so use System Settings search or the Help menu when an option is not immediately visible.

Find settings

Open System Settings from the Apple menu, Dock or Spotlight. Use its search field when a category is unfamiliar.

Note the original value before changing an option you do not understand. Some changes require an administrator password or Touch ID.

Manage accounts and attention

Create a separate user account for each regular user. Use a standard account for everyday work when administrator rights are unnecessary.

Review notification permissions and configure Focus to reduce interruptions without hiding important account or security messages.

Improve accessibility

Accessibility settings include VoiceOver, Zoom, Display, Spoken Content, captions, pointer, keyboard and other supports.

Change one feature at a time and test it. Accessibility options can improve comfort and productivity for permanent, temporary or situational needs.

Guided practice

  1. Find Display, Sound and Notifications in System Settings.
  2. Identify the current account type without changing it.
  3. Review one accessibility option and test it safely.

Knowledge check

  1. Where can System Settings be opened?
  2. Why use separate accounts?
  3. Who can benefit from accessibility features?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
