Protect important files, recover earlier versions and manage storage without unsafe cleanup.

Protect important files, recover earlier versions and manage storage without unsafe cleanup.

What you will learn

  • Configure and verify a Time Machine backup
  • Explain backup versus sync
  • Review storage and recover files safely

Before you begin

Use non-sensitive practice files and save your work before changing settings. Menu names can vary with the macOS version and MacBook model, so use System Settings search or the Help menu when an option is not immediately visible.

Use Time Machine

Time Machine can automatically back up apps, accounts, settings and files to a suitable backup disk or supported destination. Connect the disk and follow Time Machine settings.

Encrypt the backup when appropriate and protect its password. Allow initial backup time and do not disconnect the disk while data is actively being written.

Test recovery

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Enter Time Machine or use the appropriate restore workflow to recover a harmless test file.

iCloud syncing and Time Machine serve different purposes. Keep another recoverable copy of irreplaceable information where practical.

Manage space

Storage settings show categories using disk space. Review Downloads, large files and unused apps carefully rather than installing untrusted cleaner software.

Emptying Trash permanently removes its contents. Back up uncertain files and confirm what will be deleted before reclaiming space.

Guided practice

  1. Identify the three most important Mac folders.
  2. Confirm whether they are backed up, synced or only local.
  3. Create, delete and restore a harmless test file.
  4. Review storage without deleting uncertain data.

Knowledge check

  1. Why should a restore test be performed?
  2. Is iCloud sync a complete replacement for backup?
  3. What happens when Trash is emptied?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
