Choose the right starting arrangement for a small business before registering or moving a number.
Part 1 of 10 | WhatsApp Business for Beginners
Learning goals Explain what the WhatsApp Business app is for, choose an account ownership plan and identify setup checks. Your output is a one-page readiness sheet that protects existing conversations and avoids unnecessary purchases.
Before you begin Allow 75 minutes. You should be able to unlock a smartphone, type and connect to the internet. Use your own business information or the fictional shop in this course. Every exercise can begin on paper. Do not migrate a number, delete an account or contact real customers simply to finish a lesson.
Understand the product you are learning The WhatsApp Business app helps a small business manage customer conversations and show information about its products or services. It adds business tools to familiar messaging. It does not automatically provide customers, keep complete accounts or make a business legally registered. You still need a clear offer, reliable delivery and the business requirements applicable to your activity.
The Business Platform is a different product, often used with software integrations and larger messaging operations. Its template, pricing and automation rules should not be copied into app instructions without checking their scope. This course covers the Business app. It requires no API integration, developer account, paid advertising or subscription.
Choose a number you can keep control of Decide who owns the business number, who pays for the mobile service and who can receive verification messages or calls. Avoid building a customer contact route around a temporary helper's personal number. If that person leaves, access and customer continuity can become difficult. Keep the provider account and recovery arrangements under appropriate business control.
If the proposed number already has WhatsApp conversations, treat moving it as a planned change. Check the official instructions for the current app, source device and destination device, including backup and restoration requirements. Do not assume one number can be registered independently in both personal and Business apps at once. Special product arrangements do not mean every account supports the same setup.
Prepare before installation or migration Use the download links from WhatsApp's official Business app page to reach the appropriate store. Confirm you are choosing WhatsApp Business rather than an unofficial modified app with a similar icon. Read its current compatibility and terms. The app is offered as free to download, but mobile data and optional services may cost money; inspect any paid offer separately.
For a real registration, enter the country and number accurately and follow the verification method offered. Enter a code only into the official process you initiated. Never read it aloud to a caller. If an existing account matters, pause until its recovery and backup route is understood. This course does not require a learner to accept a migration risk for practice.
Make a realistic customer service promise Decide which enquiries belong on WhatsApp, when you can respond and who answers. A solo owner should not promise instant replies throughout the day if they are also serving people in person. Write response hours that fit your work and identify an alternative contact route for situations you cannot handle in a chat.
Sainabou is an invented shop owner selling notebooks and stationery. She wants customers to ask about stock before collecting orders. Her first aim is to answer ten suitable enquiries accurately over a practice week, not to message everyone in her address book. All names, prices and order quantities in the course are invented examples, not local market quotations or earning promises.
Record boundaries before adding customers List the data you need for an enquiry, such as the requested item and collection preference. Do not collect identity documents or financial account details merely to answer a stock question. Decide which team member can see conversations and how errors will be escalated. Permission-based communication and data care are developed in later lessons.
Creating a profile or catalog can make information visible to others. Draft content first if your business is not ready for public enquiries. A paper exercise must be clearly labelled as practice, and a real profile must accurately represent its owner. Do not impersonate an existing business while learning how the fields work.
Guided exercise 1. Write your intended customer, product or service and main reason for using the Business app. Name one task it will not replace, such as stock counting or bookkeeping.
2. Record who controls the proposed number and recovery route, without recording passwords or verification codes. Mark any existing chats that require a migration plan.
3. Find the official download route and inspect compatibility. If the app is already installed, identify its name and version instead of reinstalling it.
4. Draft response hours and a clear alternative contact method. Check whether those promises are realistic for a busy working day.
5. Complete the readiness sheet with ready, needs checking or blocked beside number ownership, backup, device support and public business information. Continue with paper planning where needed.
Knowledge check 1. Is the Business app the same as the Business Platform?
2. Should you move a number before checking important existing conversations?
3. Does an app download mean every associated service is free?
Answer guide 1. No. They are different products with different capabilities and requirements.
2. No. Confirm the supported migration and recovery process first.
3. No. Data charges and optional paid services can apply.
Completion standard Produce a readiness sheet with a controlled number, realistic service hours, an official installation route and a specific action for each unresolved issue. Answer all questions correctly. A paper plan qualifies; registration or migration is not required to pass.
