Microsoft Windows for Beginners Part 5 Installing and Managing Applications
Install trusted applications, choose defaults and remove unwanted software through Windows controls.
Install trusted applications, choose defaults and remove unwanted software through Windows controls.
What you will learn
- Recognise trustworthy installation sources
- Install update repair and uninstall applications
- Choose default applications by file type
Before you begin
Use a practice account or harmless files where possible. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can place commands differently, so use Settings search when a named option is not immediately visible. Save work before changing system settings.
Choose a safe source
Prefer Microsoft Store or the software publisher’s official website. Avoid download buttons on advertisements and websites that bundle unrelated software.
Before installing, check the publisher, system requirements, price and requested permissions. Decline optional toolbars or extras you do not need.
Manage applications
Settings under Apps lists installed software. Depending on the application, its menu may offer Modify, Repair, Reset or Uninstall.
Save work before updating or uninstalling. Restart when Windows or the installer specifically requests it.
Default applications
A default app opens a particular link or file type. Choose defaults in Settings rather than repeatedly selecting an application.
Changing a default does not convert existing files; it only changes which app normally opens them.
Guided practice
- Open the installed-apps list without removing anything.
- Identify the publisher of one installed application.
- Review the default app for PDF files or web links.
- Practise cancelling an installation before any change is made.
Knowledge check
- Which software sources are generally safest?
- Does changing a default app convert a file?
- Why should optional bundled software be reviewed?
Completion standard
Continue when you can perform the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
