Microsoft Windows for Beginners Part 4 Settings Accounts and Personalisation

Adjust important Windows settings, understand accounts and personalise the PC without weakening security.

Adjust important Windows settings, understand accounts and personalise the PC without weakening security.

What you will learn

  • Navigate the Settings app
  • Understand local Microsoft standard and administrator accounts
  • Adjust display sound and personalisation settings

Before you begin

Use a practice account or harmless files where possible. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can place commands differently, so use Settings search when a named option is not immediately visible. Save work before changing system settings.

Find settings

Open Settings with Windows+I and use its search box when you do not know the category. System covers display, sound, notifications, power and storage.

Settings changes can affect every application. Note the original value before changing an unfamiliar option.

Understand accounts

A standard account is suitable for everyday work. An administrator can install system-wide software and change protected settings, so administrator access should be used carefully.

A Microsoft account can sync supported settings and connect services. A local account remains on the device. Use a strong password or PIN and never share it.

Personalise accessibly

Adjust scale and text size for comfortable reading. Choose a background, colours and theme without reducing contrast.

Set volume and the correct sound device. Review notification permissions so important warnings remain visible without constant distractions.

Guided practice

  1. Open Settings and locate Display.
  2. Check scale and text size without changing them unnecessarily.
  3. Find account information and identify the account type.
  4. Adjust one personalisation option and one notification preference.

Knowledge check

  1. Which shortcut opens Settings?
  2. Why should daily work normally use a standard account?
  3. What should be considered when choosing colours?

Completion standard

Continue when you can perform the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
