Create a dependable folder system and safely copy, move, rename, search and delete files.

What you will learn

  • Understand drives folders files and extensions
  • Organise and search in File Explorer
  • Use the Recycle Bin and avoid destructive mistakes

Before you begin

Use a practice account or harmless files where possible. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can place commands differently, so use Settings search when a named option is not immediately visible. Save work before changing system settings.

Understand storage

A drive contains folders, and folders contain files or more folders. File extensions such as .docx, .jpg and .pdf indicate the file type and associated application.

File Explorer opens with Windows+E. Home provides frequent and recent locations, while This PC shows common folders and available drives.

Organise files

Create descriptive folders and filenames. Rename with F2 or the context menu. Copy creates another version; Cut and Paste moves the original.

Use Details view when dates, types and sizes matter. Search inside the correct folder to reduce irrelevant results.

Delete and recover

Delete normally moves local files to the Recycle Bin, where they may be restored until the bin is emptied. Shift+Delete can bypass it.

Cloud-synced and network files can behave differently. Confirm the location and backup before deleting important data.

Guided practice

  1. Create a Practice folder inside Documents.
  2. Create subfolders named Letters, Pictures and Receipts.
  3. Copy a harmless file into Practice and rename it descriptively.
  4. Delete the copied file and restore it from Recycle Bin.

Knowledge check

  1. What does a file extension indicate?
  2. What is the difference between Copy and Cut?
  3. Why should Shift+Delete be used cautiously?

Completion standard

Continue when you can perform the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
