Excel for Beginners Part 10 Building a Practical Budget Dashboard
Combine tables, formulas, checks and charts into a complete monthly budget workbook you can maintain.
Combine tables, formulas, checks and charts into a complete monthly budget workbook you can maintain.
What you will learn
- Plan a small workbook before building
- Combine the course skills into one project
- Check accuracy and prepare a reusable monthly process
Before you begin
Open Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet application that supports standard Excel formulas. Create a practice copy so mistakes are safe to undo. Complete each action yourself rather than only reading it.
Design before typing
Create an Inputs sheet for transactions and a Summary sheet for results. Decide the required columns before entering data.
For a budget, useful transaction columns include Date, Category, Description, Type and Amount. Keep income and expense labels consistent.
Build the calculations
Convert transactions to a table. Use SUM for totals and SUMIF to total amounts by category or type.
Calculate Balance as Total Income minus Total Expenses. Add a check that the displayed category totals equal the raw expense total.
Present and maintain
Create a simple chart of expenses by category and place it beside the summary, not over the source data.
Each month, add transactions to the table, review blanks and errors, refresh the summary and save a dated backup copy.
Guided practice
- Create Inputs and Summary worksheets.
- Enter at least fifteen realistic transactions and convert them to a table.
- Calculate income, expenses, balance and category totals.
- Add one clear chart and an accuracy check.
- Explain the workbook to another person in two minutes.
Knowledge check
- Why separate input data from a summary?
- What should an accuracy check compare?
- What routine keeps the workbook reusable?
Completion standard
You are ready for the next part when you can complete the guided practice without copying the instructions word for word and can answer the knowledge-check questions in your own language.
