Testing Performance Search and Browser Quality
Find problems before launch and help pages load quickly and communicate clearly.
Find problems before launch and help pages load quickly and communicate clearly.
What you will learn
- Test content links and interactions
- Improve image and asset performance
- Add useful page metadata and search structure
Before you begin
Create a separate practice folder and use non-sensitive sample content. Keep backup copies before restructuring files. Browser interfaces vary, so use the browser developer tools available on your computer.
Test systematically
Review spelling, factual accuracy, navigation, forms and empty or error states. Test with keyboard input and more than one current browser.
Use developer tools to inspect errors and responsive layouts. Fix the underlying HTML or CSS rather than hiding symptoms with repeated overrides.
Improve performance
Resize and compress images, choose an appropriate format and load non-critical images lazily. Remove unused libraries and avoid unnecessarily large font files.
Performance depends on network and device conditions. Test a production-like build on a slower connection instead of relying only on a fast computer.
Support discovery
Give each page a unique descriptive title and useful main heading. Write a concise description and use meaningful link text and semantic structure.
Search optimisation begins with useful, accessible content. Avoid hidden keywords, copied text and misleading titles.
Guided practice
- Test every page, link and form state.
- Measure image sizes and optimise the largest one.
- Review titles, headings and descriptions across the site.
Knowledge check
- What should cross-browser testing cover?
- Why test on a slower connection?
- What makes a page title useful?
Completion standard
Continue when you can complete the guided practice and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
