Part 7 of 10 | Freelancing and Remote Work for Beginners

Learning goals

Turn an enquiry into a defined scope, estimate production and administration time, and calculate a simple project return. Record revisions, acceptance and changes clearly. Understand that a price calculation is a planning tool and that a written teaching template does not settle every legal or tax question.

Before you begin

Continue the fictional three-page information-sheet project. Assume the client supplies final approved text, requires an editable document and PDF, and wants one round of formatting corrections. All amounts in this lesson are invented for arithmetic practice. They are not market rates, platform fees, tax advice or an offer to perform real work.

Describe a deliverable that can be checked

Write the deliverable in observable terms: format up to three pages of supplied text, apply consistent headings and spacing, preserve wording, and provide the two agreed formats. Identify inputs, exclusions and an acceptance checklist. “Make it professional” can express a preference, but it does not define when a task is complete.

Clarify who can approve the result and how feedback will be consolidated. Five people sending separate changes can turn one revision into several conflicting tasks. Agree what one revision round means, such as one combined list of changes within the original formatting brief. New text, extra pages or a redesigned layout can require a separate estimate rather than being silently absorbed.

Estimate the whole task

List input review, production, quality checks, communication, revisions and delivery. For the fictional project, allow five hours for production and four hours across review, communication and revisions: nine hours total. This is a planning assumption. If practice suggests you need longer, adjust the estimate before making a promise.

Track actual time on the simulation so you can compare it with the estimate. Unbilled administration still consumes your working time. A project that appears attractive when divided only by editing hours may look different when preparation and follow-up are included. Keep available capacity separate from the number of hours you hope to sell.

Calculate a simple planning return

Assume a fictional direct project price of GMD 3,000 and attributable project costs of GMD 300. Subtracting those costs leaves GMD 2,700. Dividing by nine total hours gives GMD 300 per hour before tax and any other costs not included in the example. This is a simple project contribution calculation, not salary, taxable profit or guaranteed earnings.

Now suppose two unexpected hours are added without changing the price. The same GMD 2,700 divided by eleven hours is about GMD 245.45 per hour. The comparison shows why scope and realistic estimates matter. It does not tell you what rate to charge; actual costs, skills, demand and obligations differ. Platform charges or currency conversion would also need to be included where applicable.

Choose a payment structure deliberately

A fixed price is tied to an agreed result. An hourly arrangement depends on an agreed rate and an accepted record of time, often with limits or approval rules. Neither automatically removes risk. Discuss how additional work is authorised, when payment becomes due and what process applies if the parties disagree.

On Upwork, fixed-price protection has conditions including advance milestone funding, matching scope and the required submission process; it is not a guarantee. Hourly protection likewise has eligibility conditions and excludes manual time and bonuses. Read the complete current rules before relying on either arrangement. A direct-client agreement does not inherit a platform's protection simply because the work is similar.

Record the agreement before starting

Your practice agreement should identify the parties, deliverables, inputs, exclusions, timetable, price, currency, payment stages, revisions and acceptance process. Include how scope changes will be agreed. Identify questions about confidentiality, ownership, permitted use and cancellation rather than assuming that payment automatically resolves every issue. Seek suitable advice for real terms you do not understand.

Use a specific delivery date and time zone, and explain dependencies such as receiving final text. Keep a record of agreement through the authorised channel. A message saying “sounds good” may be ambiguous if several versions of the brief exist. Ask which version is accepted and preserve that version alongside later authorised changes.

Handle changes with a short decision record

If the client adds two pages, pause that extra work and explain its effect on price or timing. Record the request, your proposed adjustment and the client's decision. Continue only within the agreed scope while the change is unresolved. This approach avoids an argument later about whether extra work was included or authorised.

Guided exercise

1. Write a one-page scope for the information sheet with measurable outputs, exclusions, inputs and acceptance checks.

2. Break the nine-hour estimate into named tasks. Compare each estimate with evidence from your practice work.

3. Calculate the fictional project contribution and effective hourly amount for nine and eleven hours. Label both as before tax and other omitted costs.

4. Draft the agreement outline, including revision and payment questions that would need resolution before a real start.

5. Draft a change request for two extra pages. Leave it pending until the fictional client accepts a specific revised version.

Knowledge check

1. What is GMD 3,000 minus GMD 300?

2. Why include administration in the time estimate?

3. Does a funded platform milestone make payment unconditional?

Answer guide

1. GMD 2,700, a project contribution in this simplified example.

2. It uses real capacity and affects the return for the total time spent.

3. No. Scope, submission and other current conditions still apply.

Completion standard

Provide a measurable scope, nine-hour estimate, correct calculations, agreement outline and pending change record. Show GMD 300 per hour for nine hours and approximately GMD 245.45 for eleven. Keep payment protection conditional and distinguish a teaching agreement from reviewed terms for a real engagement.
